Teeth Whitening
Before and after photo of teeth whitening treatmentIf you are dissatisfied with the brightness of your smile, you are not alone. Teeth whitening treatment is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures we perform here at Prosthodontics of Princeton. This is because professional whitening treatment is safer and more effective than store-bought alternatives. You can also experience the wonderful benefits of In-office Zoom whitening treatment!

How Your Teeth Stain

There are two types of staining: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic stains occur when the actual tooth structure undergoes a physical change creating a discoloration. This could occur as the teeth are developing as in cases of Tetracycline stain or excessive fluoride ingestion as a chid. Unfortunately, intrinsic stains do not respond to whitening or bleaching solutions.

Extrinsic stains, on the other hand, are the result of tooth exposure to pigment-heavy foods and beverages, such as tea, coffee, and wine. Tobacco use is also a big contributor to extrinsic stains. The outer layer of our teeth, the enamel, is porous and picks up these types of stains as we age. During your initial appointment, Dr. Isaacson, Dr. Reinhardt and Dr. Milone will be able to determine if your stains qualify for a professional whitening treatment.

In-Office Zoom Whitening

If you are in a hurry to get your teeth whitened for that special occasion, Zoom whitening may be just what you are looking for. Zoom whitening is an in-office power whitening procedure that brightens your teeth in about an hour. Prior to your actual whitening procedure, we will make impressions of your teeth so we may fabricate trays to be used after the Zoom procedure.. You will be given special desensitizing toothpaste to be used two weeks prior to the Zoom appointment to help reduce sensitivities from the whitening procedure. During your Zoom whitening appointment, we first isolate your teeth to protect your gums during the whitening process. Next, we apply a high-concentration whitening gel directly to the surfaces of your teeth. The process involves three fifteen minute sessions with a heating light that activates the gel. For the next two to three days, the patient will follow up with thirty minute whitening sessions per day at home to ensure the results are long lasting. The Zoom whitening eliminates approximately 7-10 days of at home whitening.

Before we begin treatment, we may take photographs of your teeth to establish a baseline and monitor your progress. By the end of your treatment, your teeth could be up to eight shades whiter than your baseline!

At-Home Whitening

The at-home alternative to teeth whitening involves approximately 10-14 days of 30 minute whitening sessions with custom made trays. We will generally use a milder whitening gel for this procedure since it is used for a longer period of time than the in-office technique. We will take an impression of your teeth to ensure your tray is custom-fit to your mouth. A custom-fit tray provides more effective results than stock or boil-and-bite tray.

Although the gel may be a lower concentration of active ingredient than the high-concentration solution we offer with Zoom whitening, it will still be stronger than store-bought products. Over-the-counter whitening products have a lower concentration of active ingredients for safety reasons since these procedures are not professionally monitored. Since the concentration of the active ingredient is lower, the whitening achieved from these store bought whiteners often doesn’t last. Many people try whitening toothpaste, strips, rinses, and gels before they move forward with professional treatment.
