Dental Bonding

Princeton, NJ
Woman smiling with dental bonding.Dental Bonding is the fastest and easiest way to take a smile with some minor defects, the kind we all get simply as part of daily life, and give it a noticeable cosmetic upgrade. Prosthodontics of Princeton offers bonding for a complete array of cosmetic and restorative dentistry choices.

Understanding Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is the preferred cosmetic treatment for any minor blemishes. Bonding cannot fix major problems, but is ideal for issues such as small chips or spaces between teeth. During a dental exam, we use a composite resin that is somewhat similar to clay and modify it to match your teeth. The name for this treatment comes from how we “bond” the resin to the surface of your teeth. Unlike procedures like crowns or veneers, this means that the underlying structure of the tooth is intact, including the enamel, so bonding can be reversed at a later point in time.

Which Option Is Best for You?

There are a lot of cosmetic and restorative treatments promising to repair minor damage — fillings, dental crowns, inlays and onlays, and even veneers. Breaking down the differences can be time-consuming, and it is best to discuss your choices in-person during a consultation or dental exam with one of our dental professionals, but here are a few things that you can keep in mind. If you are dealing with more extensive damage then you want a more powerful option like crowns or veneers, which can completely transform the appearance of a tooth or multiple teeth. Fillings and inlays and onlays can repair damage, but may not offer as much, or any, cosmetic restoration. Bonding can not only give your teeth a health boost, but can also improve the appearance of your smile.

How Dental Bonding Can Help You

If you want to fix any minor stains, cavities, chips, gaps, or even teeth of different lengths, then bonding can help you. Bonding is not meant for larger cavities, or very noticeable decay or damage. If you have teeth with severe gaps or crowding, or if your uneven teeth are actually the result of receding gums, then you may benefit more from orthodontic treatment or a gum lift. Bonding is a great choice for patients that do not have the time for multiple lengthy visits to our office, such as when getting veneers, because of how quick regular dental exam appointments are.

Getting a Tooth Bonded

Bonding is so fast that you can probably do it on your lunch break. We apply the composite resin to the targeted tooth, carefully sculpting, smoothing, and polishing it so that there is no visible difference between the bonded tooth and the rest of your teeth. The material is hardened into place with an ultraviolet light, meaning that the entire process is completely non-invasive. No local anesthesia is necessary, and even those with sensitive teeth should experience no discomfort.
